In 2016, UAW-Ford faced a shortage of experienced skilled labor in a variety of disciplines due to an increase in retiring journeymen. In an effort to develop a pipeline of qualified candidates, the company worked with Penn Foster to develop a custom curriculum for UAW-Ford's Industrial Readiness Certificate Program. To date, over 5,000 employees have enrolled in the pre-apprenticeship program, with an 86% satisfaction rate. With over 6,000 truck repair technicians across 700+ service facilities, Penske was seeking create a standardized company-wide training program to train diesel mechanic technicians at various skill levels. Penn Foster developed a custom curriculum consisting of four levels of training that helped Penske technicians gain the knowledge needed to work on a variety of truck makes & models. To date, Penske has issued over 1,600 certifications to its technicians, and has found that employees who complete the training are 50% more likely to stay with the company. Seeking a flexible option for their DOL-registered Electrical Apprenticeship program, MetroPower turned to Penn Foster for the related instruction component of the apprenticeship. Penn Foster developed a customized, 576-hour curriculum that fit the needs of MetroPower's commercial and industrial markets, and allowed workers to complete training while traveling for projects.
