What Students Learn: This course introduces you to the various domains of the construction industry: carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, roofing, drywall work, general maintenance, and so on. You’ll learn about the differences between residential and commercial construction. The duties and tasks of the building trades professional are also explained in this course. You’ll learn about the methods of obtaining apprentice and master licenses as well as the steps of professional licensing. The needed certificates and licensing requirements for building trades also are listed and discussed. Finally, you’ll learn about the proper safety measures required in various areas of the construction industry. Securing a safe environment is crucial to ensuring individual workers’ safety.

  • Explain the elements used in construction drawings relating to the shape, style, and design of a building
  • Explain the methods and building and zoning codes used to construct foundations
  • Describe the characteristics of lumber used in building construction

Tools, Foundations, and Concrete Work

Course #: CRP040
Duration: 49.3 hours
What Students Learn: The first lesson in this course will introduce you to the common hand tools and power tools used by carpenters, the proper methods of caring for tools, and tool safety procedures. The second lesson will cover concrete mixing, pouring, and finishing as well as foundation building. Your final lesson is a practical exercise that will help you to apply the carpentry skills you’ve learned up to this point in your program. In this course, you’ll also be given more information about the optional building project that you can complete as part of your Carpenter program. Remember that the building project is an optional portion of the program that can greatly enhance your learning experience.

Framing

What Students Learn: The first lesson will introduce you to floor framing, while the second lesson will cover wall and stair framing in detail. In the third lesson, you’ll learn about roof styles, framing, and finishing. Your final lesson is a practical exercise that will help you apply the carpentry skills you’ve learned up to this point in the program. You’ll also be given more information about the optional building project you can complete as part of your program. Remember, the building project is an optional portion of the program that can enhance your learning experience.

  • Describe the various framing systems used in building construction
  • Explain the methods used for framing walls and stairways
  • Explain how to apply different roofing materials

Insulation and Exterior Finishes

What Students Learn: This course is broken down into three lessons. The first lesson introduces you to the installation of windows, exterior doors, and insulation. The second lesson covers the installation of siding and the construction of porches, decks, and fences. The final lesson is a practical exercise that will help you to apply the carpentry skills that you’ve learned up to this point in the program. You’ll also be given more information about the optional building project that you can complete as part of the carpenter program. Remember that the building project is an optional portion of the program, but it can greatly enhance your learning experience.

By the end of this course, you'll be able to:

  • Explain how to properly install doors and windows to ensure proper insulation and ventilation
  • Describe how to properly install siding and decks

Interior Finishes

Course #: CRP070
Duration: 51.4 hours
What Students Learn: This course is broken down into four lessons. In your first lesson, you’ll look at the techniques that are used to hang and finish drywall. You’ll learn about the different tools and materials used, how to hang drywall on ceilings, the fasteners to use, how to tape and finish, and so on. In the second lesson, you’ll learn about interior doors, door jambs and casings, window trim, base trim, molding, and stair finishing. The third lesson will teach you about finish floors and ceilings. You’ll learn how to install suspended ceilings and interlocking tile ceilings as well as how to lay out these systems. Your final lesson is a practical exercise that will provide you with the opportunity to put your newly learned skills to use.

By the end of this course, you'll be able to:

  • Explain how to properly install drywall
  • Describe how to finish installing doors, windows, and stairs
  • Describe how to install ceiling and flooring
