What Students Learn: There are 7 Lessons as follows:
Lesson One - Overview
Includes definition of Income Statement, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statement - what they are and what they measure about a business. Drills allow practice of the main concepts.
Lesson Two - The Income Statement
Takes each item on an Income Statement, and thoroughly covers what the item shows about a business. The student constructs an actual Income Statement step-by-step. Coverage includes the difference between Gross Sales and Revenue, Cost of Sales, Gross Margin, Selling Expense, General and Administrative Expenses, Operating Margin, Depreciation & Amortization, Other Expenses, Taxes and Net Profit.
Lesson Three - The Balance Sheet
Coverage includes all the Asset, Liability and Equity items on a Balance Sheet: Cash, Accounts Receivable, Inventory, Prepaid Expenses, Property Plant & Equipment, Intangibles, Accounts Payable, Notes Payable, Accrued Expenses, Taxes Payable, Deferred Taxes, Long-Term Debt, Preferred Stock, Common Stock, Paid-in-Capital, Retained Earnings.
Lesson Four - The Cash Flow Statement
Coverage includes Cash from Operating Activities - Sales, Payments for Products, Payments for Operating Expenses, Interest Payments; Cash from Investing activities like purchase or sale of Assets; Cash from Financing activities like Short and Long-Term Borrowing, Capital Stock Issue and Dividends to Shareholders.
Lesson Five - Linking the Statements
The student learns how to read all three statements together and how the various items on one statement relate to the other two statements. Also included is a graphical drill on how "accrual accounting" works and how this is reflected on a cash flow statement.
Lesson Six - Analyzing the Statements
The student learns what the various financial ratios are and what they mean. These are the ratios used by investors, bankers, suppliers, etc. in evaluating the relative strengths of a company. These ratios are drilled using the actual numbers input by the student. Included in this lesson is a thorough tutorial on inventory costing and how the selection of different costing methods effects reported profits and assets.
Lesson Seven - Review, Exam and Certificate of Completion
After a complete review of the major concepts, the student takes a final exam and is then eligible for a certificate of completion suitable for framing.

Lesson Five - Other Investments
Coverage includes bank accounts, real estate, precious metals, commodities and futures, options - put and call, options - price components - value and time, collectibles.
Lesson Six - Barriers to Investing & Handling
Coverage includes understanding the business cycle, bull and bear; long, short and hedge; risk and diversification, volatility and risk analysis, liquidity, inflation and handling inflation, taxes and providing for taxes, fraud and how to avoid.
Lesson Seven - Getting Started
Coverage includes sources of capital, investing with lump sum and periodic payments, planning for periodic withdrawals, investment strategies, measuring performance, data sources, tactical tips, what to do now.

Practical English and the Command of Words

Course #: ELIM07
Duration: 36 hours
What Students Learn: Practical English and the Command of Words is a self-paced study course designed to improve the speaking, writing, and reading skills of today's working adult. The course consists of 48 four-page study units, with each unit containing a variety of topics. All units are structured to enhance the adult's interest and to guarantee organized and orderly learning. Effective communications skills are brought to life with real world examples, using a practical "hands-on" approach.

ELI is an accredited member of the Distance Education and Training Council. Practical English and the Command of Words has been evaluated by the American Council on Education's (ACE) Program of Non-Collegiate Sponsored Instruction (PONSI) and has been recommended for academic credit both as an English course and as a Business Communications course.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Improve their language skills.
  • Master the art of conversation; learning how to converse easily and convincingly.
  • Develop good speech habits.
  • Use active, dynamic words to get their point across.
  • Pronounce virtually any word properly  the first time.
  • Avoid tired, overused words and break "lazy" speech habits.

  • Expand their vocabulary.
  • Correctly punctuate any sentence.
  • Write effective memos, give memorable speeches, and communicate ideas effortlessly.
  • Spell even the most commonly misspelled words correctly.

    Testing/Completion:
  • A Final Examination is available (optional) covering mastery of the 48 study units in the course. Contact our Customer Service Department regarding setting up proctored examinations required for academic credit.
  • Individual Placement Tests and Answer Keys are available covering the following groups of study units: 1-6, 7-12, 13-18, 19-24, 25-30, 31-36, 37-42, 43-48.
  • Progress Examinations and Answer Keys are available (taken with the study units) on a quarterly basis, covering the following groups of study units: 1-12, 13-24, 25-36, 37-48.
  • Recommended course completion time per student by ELI  6 months to 1 year (maximum allowed).
  • Upon successful completion, students will receive a dictionary and a certificate of completion.
